Head posture monitoring for VR devices comparable to high precision IMU

Neck disorders have long surrounded people with specific treatments for different injuries, and determining the type of injury mostly relies on the experience and observation of the physician. Therefore, objective and quantifiable data is necessary. However, there are no easy tools to help determine this.

The Spanish research team tried to integrate VR technology with medical tools to monitor neck movements through a head-mounted display (HMD) system, such as Meta Quest 2. From data about the position and orientation of the head, data on neck activity is deduced and the type of injury is determined.

To verify the accuracy of this device, the research team compared its results with standard results obtained through an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The results proved that the error between the data obtained by the HMD and the IMU was not significant. Therefore, Meta Quest 2 is likely to be a viable alternative to traditional motion analysis systems and rehabilitation tools because of its good performance and simplicity.
