IMU Application for Knee Functional Assessment

Recently, a team of researchers from China developed an IMU-based wearable system to assess dysfunction caused by osteoarthritis of the knee. The research heavily validated the accuracy of the system in measuring gait and lower limb function, and assessed the performance of IMU sensors in this area by comparing industry-recognized motion capture and gait analysis systems.

Experimental tests showed that the IMU sensor system showed good agreement with the gold standard system in terms of spatio-temporal gait parameters, and also accurately captured the range of motion of the hip and knee joints during walking. It is worth mentioning that this IMU wearable device breaks through the traditional environmental limitations and is not only easy to operate, but also suitable for continuous long-term monitoring situations due to its cost-effectiveness, which is especially suitable for tracking and evaluating the rehabilitation process of patients. This IMU-based wearable device is suitable for remote monitoring of the functional status of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, allowing for more precise guidance of individualized rehabilitation plans and real-time monitoring of rehabilitation progress, which is expected to promote clinical efficiency and support the expansion of remote intervention for dysfunctional applications in the future.
