IMU-based energy estimation for urban driving cycles

Driving cycles are the main avenue used to analyze, design and optimize vehicle controllers for vehicle certification. Automotive research centers in India perform real-time inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based driving cycle capture and estimation of the energy consumed by a vehicle driving a distance in offline mode. Using IMU sensors, current, voltage, wheel speed and data acquisition system, road load data can be captured efficiently on the road.

The IMU is not dependent on any external network connection. By placing the sensor directly on the vehicle, data can be recorded immediately. With the help of IMU sensors, drive cycle estimation is possible. With the energy estimation, it is demonstrated that hybrid electric scooters play an important role in improving fuel economy and reducing vehicle carbon pollutants.
